KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans can hope to enjoy better and faster internet services if Barisan Nasional (BN) wins the 14th General Election, said caretaker Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.
He encouraged more competition from the service providers so that the people can enjoy lower internet plans.
Salleh who is contesting the Kota Belud parliament seat said the government has invested a lot of money to improve the internet speed in the country to promote digital marketing.
“We want to promote digital economy, that is why Alibaba came to Malaysia to produce more young entrepreneurs and all this need fast internet,” said Salleh during a political talk at Lido Food Square, off Penampang road here on Tuesday.
He was campaigning for BN candidates-MCA Kapayan state seat Datuk Francis Goh, MCA Luyang state seat Dr Pamela Yong and UPKO Penampang parliament seat Caesar Mandela Malakun.
Salleh urged the electorates to vote for Francis who has been working tirelessly for the people since the last general election.
“He (Francis) will continue to work even harder when he become the YB (elected representative). It will be easy for us to have somebody who can work with the government,” he said.
We don’t want to have people who merely wants to be a YB and keep changing places in every election, he said.
“Choose a YB that works for you and the people here is fortunate to have Datuk Francis who had been working even before he became a YB,” said Salleh.
Francis who is contesting for the first time urged the people to vote for the candidate that had been serving them and attend to their needs.
Choose the person over the party first, said the real estate developer turned politician.
Mandela who aspires to turn Penampang into an IT hub in future highlighted to the need of a faster internet speed in the constituency.
“This is the aspiration of the young entrepreneurs who are doing online business and they need fast internet speed,” said Mandela who is a newbie in the general election.
The Penampang youths also wants to see more job opportunities to be created in the district as many of them still unemployed, he said.
He commended the government for successfully organised a Job Fair in Penampang recently with the participation from 50 companies.
“There are 2,500 vacancies in the offing and 900 youths in Penampang secured a job. We want this programme to be continued in Penampang,” he called.
He also wants the prices of goods between Sabah and peninsula to be standardised if BN formed the government.
“The youth wants to see changes and development. We don’t want to follow the old style. Let’s make full use of the youth to bring the nation up,” said Mandela.
Dr Pamela said Luyang is a very critical seat because it is the most densely populated Chinese area in all the Chinese majority state seats.
“I am also an ordinary citizen working from 9am to 5.30pm in my dental clinics which I have two. I have four kids to support,” shared Dr Pamela.
“Like all of you, I know all the difficulties that you are went through daily. So if you vote for me, I will represent your voices or become your middleman with the relevant authorities,” she said.
She also pledged to be transparent where the expenditures of the annual state elected representative fund will be plastered in her office for the people to see and scrutinise.
“My responsibility is confined in the Luyang state constituency and I will attend to the issues affecting this area and the state,” she said.
“However, the complaint about the GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a national issue and that is under the parliament seat. The right place to raise that issue is in the House of Parliament,” said Dr Pamela in responding to her critics who questioned her on the social media.-By Moses Wong/BNN
