KOTA KINABALU: The intention of Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president is to raise the alarm of adverse consequences should the Likas Lagoon’s reclamation and development plan went ahead. It also showed his concern and insistence that the lagoon should stay status quo, as a water retention pond, said Chin Vui Kai.
Chin, SAPP information chief, urged all to do their best to preserve the Likas Lagoon in its present position to serve as a rainwater storage and runoff for flood waters.
He said that SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee, in a press statement recently, was to alert people of Sabah and to learn a lesson from the recent massive flood at Taman Sri Muda in the peninsula, as well as be aware of similar disasters that could cause serious losses to happen in Kg Likas and other surrounding areas.
“There is still a chance to stop the land reclamation, which has yet to become a reality. During his term in the CM office, Yong had cancelled an approved project which was intended to turn a patch of mangrove forest into a sports facility and retain the area making way for Kota Kinabalu Wetlands (formerly known as Likas Bird Sanctuary), protecting the mangrove forests in Kota Kinabalu,” Chin said.
“There is no need to waste time on finger-pointing or putting the blame on what has not happened yet,” said Chin in his reply to the DAP Likas assemblyman.
“I believe Tan Lee Fatt, the Likas assemblyman, was being used by DAP’s keyboard-troopers for politics, as he is not a person who likes to make statements,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chin thanked Chan Foong Hin, Kota Kinabalu MP for supporting Yong’s objection on the reclamation of Likas Lagoon.-pr/BNN
