KOTA KINABALU: University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) in collaboration with Global English Centre (GEC) hosted a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) workshop entitled “Nature, Society and Culture” for 9 students and 1 teacher from Nihon University Mishima Senior Highschool, Tokyo, Japan.
The workshop aimed to provide a platform for intellectual and cultural engagement to
foster a wholesome and globally savvy youth, ready to actively participate in enhancing
socio-cultural and environmental sustainability.
The workshop was conducted in English and involved local student interactions. Activities such as batik painting, gamelan, and sumazau sessions were included to provide an immersive experience for the students.
UCSF Internationalization Administrative Officer Sherylyn Selvester said that the workshop was in line with contemporary trends and UCSF’S ongoing efforts to transform into a futuristic, and globally connected University.
“UCSF aims to ensure its vision and mission gain more traction in preparing its students
to excel in the fields of tomorrow requiring cross-border bridge-building and collaborative relationships, as well as an appreciation and harmonization of cross- border diversity within a global landscape,” she said in a statement.
She pointed out that the university is committed to being at the forefront of global
engagement and hopes that intellectual and cultural engagements will enable students
to become ambassadors of sustainable development.
“This SDG workshop is one of the many initiatives taken by UCSF to become a leader
in higher learning and global engagement. The university believes that with such
initiatives, it will produce students who are capable of adapting to the challenges of
tomorrow’s global landscape,” she added.
The SDG Workshop is a part of their continuous international outreach program, which
they have been running since 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to
the lockdown, previously the workshop had only been conducted online with other Japanese schools. The workshop with Nihon University Mishima Senior High School
was the first time the workshop was conducted in person on campus.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Dr Rafiq Idris, there will be more collaboration with foreign education institutions in the near future.
