KOTA KINABALU : The Sabah Law Reform Advisory Council (SLRAC) is collaborating with the State Attorney-General’s Chambers to modernise key state laws to reflect current realities, strengthen governance, and safeguard the State’s long-term interests.
The initiative, established under the directive of the Chief Minister, covers several major laws including the Sabah Land Ordinance, Wildlife Conservation Enactment, Public Health Ordinance, Maintenance Ordinance, Climate Change Regulations, and Sabah Parks Enactment.
Chairman Tan Sri David Wong said the first phase of the review, involving the Sabah Land Ordinance and Maintenance Ordinance, has been completed and is now ready for consultation with the State Government and key stakeholders. Among the proposed reforms are measures to enhance the registration and verification of Powers of Attorney to prevent fraudulent land dealings.
The Council has also been tasked with reviewing the Sabah Mining Ordinance 1960, aiming to strengthen oversight, environmental protection, and governance in the extractive sector. The updated framework introduces clearer licensing procedures, stronger enforcement mechanisms, and improved protection of community and native rights.
“The goal is to ensure that law reform serves the public interest, promotes transparency, and reinforces institutional accountability,” Wong said.
He added that the SLRAC remains committed to an open and consultative process, ensuring that every legislative update contributes to good governance, fairness, and environmental responsibility in Sabah.-BNN
