JOHOR BAHRU: KPJ Healthcare Berhad (“KPJ Healthcare”) has announced a landmark partnership with SingHealth, Singapore’s largest and most esteemed healthcare group, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This long-term collaboration aims to drive innovation in healthcare, clinical research, education, and medical simulation.
Prof. Dato’ Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid, Chief Medical Director of KPJ Healthcare, together with Dr Nik Fawaz Nik Abdul Aziz, COO of Group Allied & Retail Health Operations, exchanged the MoU with Prof. London Lucien Ooi, Group Director of International Collaborations at SingHealth Duke-NUS and Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital and the National Cancer Centre Singapore, alongside Vijaya Rao, Director of the International Collaboration Office at SingHealth.
This partnership unites KPJ Healthcare’s extensive network of specialist hospitals across Malaysia, the country’s first private Academic Health System, the KPJ Health System (KPJHS), with SingHealth, recognised as one of Asia’s premier academic healthcare clusters. With a shared dedication to clinical excellence, they will collaborate to nurture healthcare talent, foster research and innovation, enhance specialist capabilities, and exchange knowledge and best practices.
Speaking at the event, Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, Chairman of KPJHS Governing Council and President and CEO of Johor Corporation (JCorp), said, “The biggest challenges in healthcare cannot be tackled by any single institution alone. This partnership embodies our mutual commitment to learning, developing future healthcare leaders, and advancing innovation to improve patient outcomes. Partnerships are about the future we choose to build together, not just the documents we sign.”
Prof. London Lucien Ooi highlighted the significance of the MoU: “This agreement reflects our shared vision to advance healthcare innovation, research, education, and medical simulation for our communities. It provides a framework for collaboration across multiple areas, including digital health, AI, and clinical research, fostering mutual growth and excellence.”
The MoU focuses on strategic collaborations in Clinical Education and Workforce Development, Research and Innovation, Clinical Collaboration, Digital Health & AI, and Knowledge Exchange. These initiatives will facilitate expertise sharing, strengthen specialist skills, promote multidisciplinary teamwork, and open new avenues for innovation that benefit both patients and healthcare professionals.
Initial collaborations will encompass fellowships, specialist attachments, academic exchanges, joint research, scientific publications, conferences, healthcare leadership development, medical simulation, and co-management of complex clinical cases.
For KPJ Healthcare, this alliance supports the ongoing evolution of the KPJ Health System by accelerating the integration of Practice, Education, Research, and Innovation. This will be driven through the Future Health Institute (FHI), a strategic platform dedicated to fostering collaboration with leading academic and clinical partners worldwide.
The MoU signing ceremony took place at Johor Specialist Hospital, where Prof. Hanafiah Harunarashid exchanged the agreement with Prof. London Lucien Ooi. The event was witnessed by Dr. Nik Fawaz Nik Abdul Aziz and Ms. Vijaya Rao, representing their respective organisations.-pr/BNN
