PENANG: Intuitive (NASDAQ: ISRG), a global leader in minimally invasive care and robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), has announced the signing of a lease agreement with Penang Development Corporation (PDC) for a new manufacturing facility in Bandar Cassia Technology Park, Penang, Malaysia. This strategic investment underscores the company’s confidence in Asia Pacific, one of the fastest-growing markets for robotic-assisted surgery.
The 316,000-square-foot facility is slated to commence operations in 2028, creating approximately 1,200 highly skilled jobs by 2032. The site will produce surgical instruments and electromechanical devices used with the da Vinci surgical system, expanding Intuitive’s manufacturing footprint to meet surging demand across the region.
“Asia Pacific represents one of the most promising growth opportunities for robotic-assisted surgery,” stated Glenn Vavoso, Senior Vice President and President of Asia Pacific at Intuitive. “This investment affirms our long-term commitment to the region and enhances our capacity to deliver innovation, quality, and reliability. Ultimately, it will help make robotic-assisted surgery more accessible to patients across Asia Pacific.”
Since establishing a presence in the region over two decades ago, Intuitive’s da Vinci systems have enabled surgeons to treat over 2.5 million patients across 13 markets. The company continues to work with healthcare providers to advance minimally invasive care through technology, clinical education, and building a robust robotic surgery ecosystem.
“Expanding our manufacturing network is a long-term strategic move that allows us to scale efficiently while maintaining operational excellence,” said Mark Brosius, Executive Vice President and Chief Manufacturing and Supply Chain Officer. “This new facility will be central to our global operations, ensuring we consistently deliver high-quality, innovative products to our customers and patients.”
This investment also highlights Penang’s ongoing efforts to attract high-value, innovation-driven industries. Penang Chief Minister, The Right Honourable Chow Kon Yew, commented, “Intuitive’s investment reflects the confidence global industry leaders have in Penang’s mature industrial ecosystem, skilled workforce, and manufacturing excellence. It further strengthens our MedTech sector and supports our ambition to become Southeast Asia’s leading MedTech hub.”-pr/BNN
