KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia’s willingness to accept a reciprocal Covid-19 vaccination arrangement with China gives hope to Malaysians that they will be able to overcome the pandemic soon.
SAPP Deputy President Edward Dagul said that due to the ever increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country, with Sabah among the highest in the country, there is an urgent need to see vaccinations conducted swiftly.
His statement referred to a China Daily report that in a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on May 21, the Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang had pledged that China will help improve the Covid-19 vaccine production capacity of Malaysia and encourage cooperation and communication between the two countries’ health departments and contagion control experts.
Edward noted that the Sinovac vaccine from China is expected to come in larger quantities (six million doses expected) in June, and hoped that collaborations such as these, help not only Sabah but the country as a whole as to hasten its vaccination programmes towards achieving the desired herd immunity.
“There is an urgent need for vaccinations and to give hope to the people that Malaysia, including Sabah, will overcome the pandemic before pandemic fatigue sets in,” he stressed.
“People are generally weary of this pandemic as it is causing a standstill to most daily activities while governments suffer economically and socially as well,” Edward explained.
He reiterated the need for the people to work together to support government initiatives aimed at helping the nation recover from the pandemic.-Pr/BNN
