KOTA KINABALU: Warisan should do their homework and don’t mislead the public on matters of law, says Yong Yit Jee, a lawyer and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) youth leader.
After a series of defections, Warisan finally decides to call for anti-hopping law in Sabah to be passed. Warisan secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua has recently said that the Federal Constitution is the main law in Malaysia and any law that is inconsistent with the Federal Constitution is ultra vires.
Yong, who is also SAPP supreme council member, said that the call for anti-hopping law to be passed in Sabah is all well and good but Warisan leaders should be responsible when issuing statements and not mislead the public. “They should do their homework first and seek at least basic legal consultation before issuing any statement pertaining to law. *Don’t simply interpret the law, or else they’ll become a laughing stock. ” Yong reminds.*
Yong says, “One may wonder what inconsistency is Datuk Loretto talking about. The Federal Constitution applies to the Members of Parliament while the Sabah State Constitution applies to the Sabah assemblymen.”
“Naturally, the Federal constitution on anti-hop is only applicable to MPs. So there is no issue of any state law being inconsistent with federal law.”
Nonetheless, Yong reiterates his previous calls for the Sabah state government to table the Sabah’s anti-hopping law as soon as possible. Hopefully, it will be passed and supported by all the current elected assemblymen so that the voters’ choice is respected and in turn provide for a stable political atmosphere in Sabah.-pr/BNN
