SANDAKAN: UK-based charity Orangutan Appeal UK is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special event in Sepilok, marking a quarter of a century of support for orangutan conservation and long-standing collaboration with Sabah Wildlife Department.
Since 2000, Orangutan Appeal UK has worked closely with Sabah Wildlife Department, providing funding and practical support to assist the renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and wider conservation efforts. The charity employs 13 local staff in Sepilok and has raised international awareness of the challenges faced by Bornean orangutans.
Over the years, Orangutan Appeal UK has contributed more than RM14 million to support orangutan conservation in Sabah. This funding has helped provide essential equipment, veterinary care, infrastructure, research, as well as supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction of orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans, and deliver education and outreach programmes both locally and internationally.
The 25th anniversary celebration will bring together invited guests, conservation partners, and local stakeholders to acknowledge the impact of this shared effort and to give thanks to everyone who has been part of their journey.
Jacha Potgieter, Chairman of Orangutan Appeal UK, said:
“This anniversary is a chance to celebrate what’s been achieved through strong partnerships, particularly with Sabah Wildlife Department, whose leadership and commitment have made so much possible. Orangutan conservation requires long-term dedication, and we’re proud to continue supporting efforts here in Sabah, where the impact is both immediate and lasting.”
As the charity celebrates this milestone, it also looks to the future. The threats facing orangutans are far from over, but with continued collaboration, public support and local commitment, there is hope.
Orangutan Appeal UK remains dedicated to working alongside Sabah Wildlife Department and the people of Sabah to protect one of the region’s most iconic and endangered species.-pr/BNN
