KOTA KINABALU: The Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl (RCKK Pearl) successfully launched their signature Project REAL (Rural-focused English for All ) at four elementary schools in Kudat District, on Tuesday 14/02/23.
The schools were SK Parapat Darat, SK Tinangol, SRK Lok Yuk Tamalang, and SJK(C) St
Peter.
RCKK Pearl was represented at the launchings by it’s Club President Datuk Hjh Aminah
Ambrose, along with Project REAL committee members.
Project REAL falls under one of Rotary International’s area of focus, which is on basic education and literacy, with the objective of elevating the standard of English language proficiency among elementary school children, especially in rural areas of Sabah.
Part of the programme provided by the project is training the school teachers involved so that they are better equipped in their methods of teaching the English language to their students.
In her launching address, Datuk Hjh Aminah stressed the importance of Project REAL which is a collaboration between RCKK Pearl and Sabah State Education Department through a Note of Understanding (NOU) that was signed on 21/07/16, stating that the training of school children to be proficient in both writing and speaking the English language from elementary stage will better equip them to face today’s challenging modern world with its progressive information technology that mostly accepts English as the international communication language, as well as building their confidence early on to pursue higher learning in universities, or working in an international setting in future.
The cost of adopting the four schools under RCKK Pearl’s Project REAL was RM48,000 and
was sponsored by the Malaysian Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). LDS was represented by Sister Jody Reese who officiated the launch at all four schools, and her husband Elder David Reese.
Several key persons were invited to witness the launchings at all four schools. They were Mdm Bellylyn Willie Abah who represented Sabah Education Department Deputy Director Dr Kassim Tusin, Kudat District Education Officer Dr Azlan Shafie, the School Improvement Specialist Coach Plus (SISC+) from Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah (PPD) Tuaran Dr Bitty, as well as the SISC+ from PPD Tenom Ms Mirna Humoc and her assistant Ms Suzie Samuel.
The Principals from all four schools involved also attended all the launchings. They were Mr Jeli Asangin of SK Parapat Darat, Mr Jeffrey Magimbal of SK Tinangol, Mr Abin Mosiang of SRK Lok Yuk Tamalang, and Ms Chong Li Khyun of SJK(C) St Peter.
Since the project was initiated by RCKK Pearl’s Past President Datuk Hjh Noni Said in 2016, the Club has adopted 34 rural elementary schools under Project REAL.
