KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser bin Abdul Wahid, Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), has filed a police report regarding a defamatory article published by the news portal Sabahkini2 titled “Sabah Government Urged to Terminate ECoS CEO, Approved Libaran IPP Belonging to Muhyiddin’s In-Law Without Cabinet Approval” on April 17, 2025.
The article was found to contain various false and baseless allegations against Datuk
Nasser both personally and professionally. Among these allegations is the claim that he approved the Libaran Independent Power Producer (IPP) project, owned by the former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s in-law, without obtaining approval from the Sabah State Cabinet.
Datuk Abdul Nasser firmly and vehemently denies all allegations contained in the article.
According to his official statement, all actions taken by the Chief Executive Officer of ECoS
are based on laws, regulations, policies, and official procedures established by the
government, including implementing decisions of the Sabah Energy Council as mandated by the State Cabinet.
The publication of this article appears to have malicious intent to tarnish Datuk Abdul
Nasser’s name and damage ECoS’s reputation as a credible regulatory body.
Furthermore, this article also attempts to create negative perceptions toward the Sabah
State Government as a whole.
The allegations presented in the article are not only defamatory but also potentially
undermine public trust in energy governance in the state. He considers this matter serious
as it could cause confusion among the public and investors.
The police report was made with several important objectives. First, to request a detailed
investigation into the article’s author, the operators of the Sabahkini2 portal, and any parties involved in spreading this false information.
Second, to urge legal action under Section 500 (criminal defamation) and Section 504 of the Penal Code, as well as the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Third, to consider civil action for losses and reputational damage suffered by Datuk Abdul Nasser and ECoS.
Datuk Abdul Nasser has handed this matter entirely to the authorities for appropriate action according to the law and expressed his full willingness to provide necessary cooperation in the investigation process.
