KOTA KINABALU: A Gagasan Rakyat Youth leader has accused Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong of practising blatant “double standards” in his latest attack on the RM31 billion Esteel steel project.
Lee Ka Lik, Gagasan Rakyat Youth Chief for Moyog, said it was ironic and hypocritical for Chong to now demand transparency when Warisan’s own administration had left far bigger investment promises completely unexplained.
“In April 2019, Warisan’s Chief Minister led a delegation to China and signed 12 MoUs worth RM20 billion, which was widely reported at the time,” Lee said in a statement today.
“But until today — nobody knows which companies were involved, which projects were implemented, how much investment came in, or how many jobs were created. There was ZERO public reporting,” he stressed.
In contrast, Lee said the Esteel project under GRS-PH Plus has been handled with transparency from day one.
“Everyone knows who the Esteel investor is. Minister YB Datuk Ginger Phoong has explained openly about the manufacturing license moratorium and gas supply issues. The project is following proper regulatory process,” he said.
“The difference is crystal clear: GRS-PH Plus is delivering real investments, with transparency — not just signing MoUs for photo opportunities.”
Lee said Warisan simply cannot accept the fact that Sabah is progressing under the current government.
“The truth is, Warisan CANNOT STAND to see success happening under GRS-PH Plus — because they FAILED to deliver during their time in power,” he said.
Lee threw a direct challenge to Calvin:
“If YB Calvin is truly serious about transparency, I challenge him to FIRST ask his own party to fully disclose the status of those 12 MoUs worth RM20 billion signed by Shafie in 2019.”
“And I would also advise YB Calvin: DON’T be a hypocrite. Don’t try to hide the fact that it was Shafie himself who proudly announced the RM20 billion MoUs during Warisan’s time.”-pr/BNN
