KLANG: As chronic illnesses increasingly burden Malaysians, preventive healthcare took centre stage at Sihat Fest 2026, where residents of Klang gathered at Taman Rakyat for a morning of complimentary health screenings, wellness consultations, physical activities, and family-friendly programmes aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles and raising awareness of early disease prevention.
Organised by Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre (SKSMC) in collaboration with Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) and supported by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), the event was officiated by . Dato’ Haji Abd. Hamid bin Hussain, Mayor of Klang Royal City Council. This reflected the shared commitment of healthcare providers and local authorities towards fostering a healthier and more resilient community.
During the event, Dato’ Haji Abd. Hamid highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare and community-led initiatives in enhancing public well-being: “The best hospital visit is often the one you never have to make. Health is one of our most valuable assets, yet it is often only appreciated when it is compromised. Initiatives such as Sihat Fest organised by SKSMC play a vital role in bringing health awareness and services directly to the community, empowering individuals to take proactive steps toward maintaining their well-being. By making health screenings, education, and physical activities more accessible, we can collectively build a healthier Klang for current and future generations,” he stated.
The event underscores a growing emphasis on preventive healthcare and community wellness, recognising that early intervention, regular health screenings, and active living are among the most effective strategies to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses and improve long-term health outcomes.
Also speaking at the occasion, Madam Tan Suet Guan, Hospital Director of Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre, emphasised that many serious health conditions can develop silently without obvious symptoms, making regular health checks essential: “Many serious health issues do not show symptoms in their early stages. A simple screening today could identify a problem before it becomes a medical emergency tomorrow. Prevention, early detection, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits are equally important in helping individuals lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.”
“At SKSMC, we believe healthcare should not only commence when illness occurs. Through Sihat Fest, we aim to make preventive healthcare more accessible and encourage individuals to take the first step towards better health,” she added.
A key highlight of the event was the “Jom Hike” programme, officially launched by Dato’ Haji Abd. Hamid, which brought together participants of all ages in a symbolic move towards healthier living. Attendees also participated in an energising Zumba session, reinforcing the message that physical activity can be simple, enjoyable, and accessible to everyone.
Visitors had access to a wide range of complimentary health services provided by SKSMC, including blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol screenings; body composition analysis; aerobic fitness assessments; mobile ECG testing; dietitian consultations; and organ donation awareness activities. With support from LPPKN, attendees could also undergo mammogram and HPV DNA screening services, underscoring the importance of early detection for improved health outcomes.
In addition to health screenings, visitors benefited from free consultations with Dr Gan Syang Pyng, Consultant Rheumatologist, who stressed the significance of staying active to maintain joint health and mobility. Recognising that Taman Rakyat is a popular gathering spot for many senior citizens aged 65 and above who regularly walk and exercise there, he encouraged the public to embrace regular physical activity as an effective way to reduce the risk of joint problems and remain independent as they age. Educational demonstrations, including CPR awareness sessions, were also conducted to equip the public with practical life-saving skills.
Held in conjunction with Father’s Day celebrations, the event also highlighted the vital role of families in supporting healthier lifestyle choices and fostering a culture of wellness across generations.
Complementing the health initiatives were various interactive activities, including inflatable games, balloon sculpting, and a lucky draw with prizes worth RM3,000, which helped create a lively and family-oriented atmosphere throughout the day.
Sihat Fest 2026 exemplifies SKSMC’s ongoing commitment to extending healthcare beyond hospital walls by empowering the community with the knowledge, resources, and support needed to take control of their health. Through initiatives such as this, SKSMC continues to promote a culture of prevention, early detection, and active living within the Klang community.-pr/BNN
