KOTA KINABALU: A two-day competition dubbed Borneo Hospitality Challenge 2020 is being organised by Borneo Culinary Association Sabah and Sarawak.
The competition will be held on May 30-31 at the Sabah International Convention Centre, to coincide with the State Level Harvest Festival celebration, and aims to make Borneo Island into a world-class culinary venue.
It’s organising chairman Dion Jee said to this end invitations have been sent out to international participants and about 250 participants from the Southeast Asia region are expected to vie for the top honours at the inaugural affair.
He said international judges will be invited to carry out the judging process, adding that they want to divert the international level hospitality challenge to Borneo Island.
According to him, such events have been held in Peninsula Malaysia and it is high time to hold it within this region where Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan will take turn holding the event.
There are 20 categories available which includes cold display, patisserie, artistic and hot cooking, food and beverage skill for individual as well as team challenge for professional and junior (students aged 16-25).
The top three winners for each category will respectively receive prize money of USD1,000, USD500 and USD200 as well as medals and certificates issued by International Food and Beverage Association (IFBA).
There are entry fees of RM150, RM200 and RM500, depending on the categories, for participants including homemakers, so long as they adhere to the rules and regulations of the competition, he said, adding that the event will start from 7am to 9pm.
The competition is organised by Borneo Culinary Association Sabah and Sarawak, and endorsed by Malaysian Food and Beverage Executive Association as well as IFBA and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment. -BNN
