KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Economic and Education Society (PEPS) held a special session during the Third International Conference on Economics (ICE) 2021 on Oct 28.
The conference was organized by the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy,
Universiti Malaysia Sabah with over 40 presenters and more than 300 participants.
In that specific session entitled ‘Sabah’s Economy:,’ five papers were presented.
Topic on Sabah’s Economy Since Independence: Issues; The Way Forward was
presented by Dr Rafiq Idris and it is based on a research involving a group of researchers
from UMS. The research was headed by Dr Rafiq Idris and assisted by a group of researchers, namely Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur, Dr Rozilee Asid, Madam Sharija Shaari, Dr Sidah Idris and Mr Azizan Morshidi.
The same group also produced another paper entitled ‘How Much Investment Sabah Need?: Input-Output Table Analysis,’ and was also presented by Dr Rafiq.
A paper on Best Regulatory Practices in Attracting Investors to Sabah was presented by madam Sharija Che Shaari. The paper was written by Madam Sharija Che Shaari and co-authored by Dr Rafiq Idris, Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur, Dr Rozilee Asid, Dr Sidah Idris and Mr Azizan Morshidi.
All the three papers mentioned are based on a research conducted by them, funded by the university (SDK0094-2019).
Dr Khairul Hanim Pazim presented a paper on ‘Contemporary Issues in Human Resource Economics.’ The co-authors of the paper are Prof Datuk Kasim Mansur, Dr Rafiq Idris and Dr Beatrice Lim.
A paper entitled Long-Run Shifts of the Beveridge Curve in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak was presented by Marcilla Elmy Malasius. The paper was also co- authored by Dr James Alin and Dr Mori Kogid.
According to Dr Rafiq Idris, the Chairman of Sabah Economic and Education Society, the special session gives an excellent platform to PEPS and UMS researchers to present some data and findings based on the research they conducted on Sabah’s economy.
Dr Rafiq Idris also highlighted that he will continuously engage with stakeholders in Sabah
so that they can work strategically for the benefits Sabah.
In this regard, Dr Rafiq Idris, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy who is also the Associate Fellow for Ungku Aziz Centre for Development
Studies (Universiti Malaya) highlighted that PEPS has been very consistent on the effort of
educating, increasing awareness and stimulating interest for research on Sabah’s economy.
“We shall continuously work other stakeholders. On another note, he explained that the
Society is interested in increasing economic, financial and other forms of literacy in the state, based on their limited affordability.”-pr/BNN
