KOTA KINABALU: Tan Sri T.C Goh, President of the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) has urged the people of Sabah, the Chinese community included, to pay close attention to the Sarawak state election, which polling falls on this coming Saturday, 18 December.
He said, this is only appropriate since the two neighbouring states shared some common features, whether in terms of landscape, or sentiment of the people.
He said, being part of the “East Malaysian Family”, he shared the same aspiration of the people of the two states i.e. to regain their “political autonomy”, and to achieve greater political stability and unity among the people.
He asserted that it is the common aspiration of the people of the two states to see the contents of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which the Federal government and the state governments of Sabah and Sarawak are working on, to be fully implemented without any further delay.
He acknowledged that the coming Sarawak state election will be fiercely contested by a record number of 349 candidates in its history, to elect 82 state assemblymen and assemblywomen.
In a statement issued today, Goh who is also President of the Federation of Sabah and Labuan Hokkien Associations (FSLHA) hoped that all quarters involved i.e the political parties, their candidates and supporters would strive to exercise greater self discipline and abide by the election rules during the election campaigns, so as to ensure that the election is smoothly and successfully conducted.
He was also confident that the people of Sarawak have the wisdom to make the right decision, in the best interest of the state and its people.
He believed, the candidates, whether new or old faces, as long as they have good track records in community service all these while, and are well recognised by the community, they would have a good chance of getting elected.
He also hoped that the state election will produce some good quality and dedicated elected representatives for those constituencies whose voters are predominantly Chinese.
He believed like in the previous state election, the Chinese voters would continue to be a significant deciding factor in some constituencies.
He also hoped that the incoming Sarawak state government would continue to forge a close rapport and cooperation with the Sabah state government, and to join hands to safeguard and pursue political autonomy for the two states.-pr/BNN
