KOTA KINABALU : The Centre for Languages and Generic Development (CLGD) at University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF Sabah) marked a successful year in 2025 by executing 14 community service projects across Sabah, engaging over 350 students in meaningful outreach efforts. These initiatives underscore the university’s dedication to social responsibility and holistic education.
The projects targeted diverse community needs, including support for orphaned children and the asnaf, environmental conservation efforts, language and educational enrichment, creative improvements in schools, and public awareness campaigns. Activities took place at welfare homes, schools, conservation sites, kindergartens, and government institutions, providing students with real-world opportunities to hone communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
With a student body of over 1,000 across four faculties — Natural Sciences and Sustainability, Development and Media Studies, Arts and Creative Media, and Management and Entrepreneurship — UCSF Sabah’s students actively participated in these initiatives, exemplifying a university-wide culture of civic engagement.
UCSF Sabah’s Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Rafiq Idris, praised the collective effort, emphasizing the importance of community service in education:
“Community service is a cornerstone of holistic education at UCSF Sabah. Such initiatives play a crucial role in shaping graduates who are socially responsible, compassionate, and aware of their role in nation-building.”
Mr William Bunyau, Head of the Centre for Languages and Generic Development, added that the programmes provided invaluable learning experiences, fostering soft skills that extend beyond academic qualifications:
“These initiatives provide valuable opportunities for students to engage with society meaningfully while developing essential soft skills that will benefit them beyond their academic journey.”
As UCSF Sabah continues to expand its community outreach, these programmes reinforce the university’s mission to produce well-rounded, socially conscious graduates who can contribute positively to society.-BNN
