KOTA KINABALU: With Datuk Noorazli Said having issued an apology for an inappropriate joke made about priests at the recent Umno general assembly, we hope this marks the end of such episodes involving callous politicians insulting the Christian community in Malaysia, said former Member of Parliament for Tawau, Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
She emphasised that the Sepang Umno chief’s apology should serve as a lesson to those who might attempt to belittle other religions, whether deliberately or unintentionally.
The former State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment pointed out that it is all too easy for individuals to make thoughtless remarks and then claim their statements were misinterpreted, often escaping without consequence beyond a simple apology.
“As experienced politicians, we must be mindful of religious sensitivities within our communities and be able to differentiate right from wrong. We should set a positive example for today’s youth and future leaders.
In a diverse society like ours, disrespect towards fellow Malaysians of different faiths is unacceptable. Upholding racial and religious harmony is fundamental to maintaining national unity and peace.
Learn from Sabah’s example. Sabah is a model state for religious tolerance, mutual understanding, and respect. It exemplifies unity in diversity, where communities coexist peacefully regardless of race, creed, or cultural background.
Most people in Sabah respect each other’s religious beliefs. We rarely see politicians making indiscriminate remarks that hurt the Christian community or other non-Muslim groups. In essence, we serve as role models,” Liew said in a statement on Tuesday.-pr/BNN
