KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu zone’s Pesta Magahau, a Rungus celebration will be held at the mini multipurpose hall of Putrajaya Telipok on July 23.
Spokesperson for the event, Jonos Lingon said the celebration will start in the morning but the programme will be carried out at 4pm and it is expected to end before midnight.
He said there will be stalls sited around the hall, where revelers can buy food and drinks.
According to him, among the highlights of the event is the Monurizak or singing competition and the Mitarab Gimpuhut Momogun (MGM).
“A traditional food competition will also be held where about ten participants are expected to compete for the winning title with their various presentations which will include pickled fish (nonsom) and hinava among others,” he shared.
“Other activities include various types of traditional sports,” he said, adding that it will be a fun filled event with an expected turnout of 500 people or more.
He adds that their inaugural Pesta Magahau in Kota Kinabalu last year held at a smaller venue was attended by 300 people due to the smaller venue.
Meanwhile, Henny Maropin who is in charge of the KK Zone’s MGM or Beauty Pageant said that about 11 participants will vie for the title during that time.
She said the criteria for participation is quite straightforward where a participant must be aged between 18 and 25 and of Rungus, Kimaragang or Bonggi descent.
“They can be of Rungus mixed descent,” she stressed adding that during the event they must wear Rungus traditional dress.
She said winners can hope to bring back cash, sash and a bouquet. The top three will represent the zone in the State Level celebration to be held on July 31 at Puruvan Square Longhouse, Matunggong.-BNN
