KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) has urged the Chinese community in the country to actively come out to vote in the 15th general election, tomorrow.
Its President, Tan Sri T.C Goh especially acknowledged that the Chinese community, which made up more than 20 per cent of the total population, plays a crucial role in deciding the future of our multiracial nation.
“The Chinese community is the second largest race in Malaysia. Hence, we must exercise our voting rights, to ensure that our constitutional rights in this multiracial country will continue to be safeguarded and cherished.
“We must also ensure that our long-existing multiracial setup will continue to be preserved and cherished,” he underscored.
In a statement issued today, Goh who is also President of The Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) noted that a total of 21,173,638 individuals are eligible to vote in the 15th general election tomorrow (19 November), to elect the new government.
He also noted that the GE15 has the biggest number of political parties/coalitions, and candidates in the history of Malaysia, with 945 candidates vying for the 222 parliamentary seats, and 108 or 11% of them consisted of independent candidates; in other words, averagely there are four candidates per parliamentary constituency. Besides this, it also sees three former prime ministers namely Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, contesting in the most expensive general election, thus far, where the Election Commission (EC) has estimated the GE15 to cost more than RM1 billion.
“Malaysia is our homeland, as patriotic Malaysian citizens, we should all come out to vote to decide our future!” he reiterated.
Goh also expressed his gratitude to all those volunteers who helped to bring home postal votes from abroad, as well as Malaysians living overseas who strived to partake in the democratic process of electing a new government for the country.
“The reason why we must come out and vote is because we loved and cared for our homeland!” he concluded.-pr/BNN
