KOTA KINABALU :The Sabah State Attorney-General’s Chambers has underscored the importance of preserving the integrity and dignity of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri (TYT) as a highly respected institution within the constitutional framework.
Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh said the TYT, appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as Head of State, serves as a symbol of unity, continuity, and sovereignty, and must be accorded full respect.
He expressed grave concern over the circulation of offensive, defamatory, false, and misleading social media posts targeting the TYT, saying such content is baseless, inaccurate, and risks undermining public trust in the institution.
“While freedom of expression is recognised under the Federal Constitution, it must be exercised responsibly. Deliberately spreading offensive, fabricated, or misleading information is harmful to public confidence and may constitute serious criminal offences under Malaysian law, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Sedition Act 1949, and the Penal Code,” he said in a statement here today.
The Chambers reminded the public to verify information through reliable sources before sharing, to use social media responsibly, and to note that legal measures may be taken where necessary to curb the spread of falsehoods and protect public order.
Brenndon added that the Chambers remains committed to upholding the rule of law while promoting constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and accurate information sharing — values that reflect democratic maturity.
He further urged the public to foster a culture of truth, integrity, and accountability in communication, stressing that Istana Seri Kinabalu represents Sabah’s history and values and must be respected as a symbol of the State.
“It is our collective responsibility to safeguard the dignity and honour of the TYT of Sabah as a noble institution,” he said.-pr/BNN
