KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Healthy Ageing Society (SHAS) held its 3rd Biennial General Meeting today at the Sabah Palliative Care Association premises in Kota Kinabalu, where members elected a new committee to serve for the 2026–2028 term.
The meeting was well attended and concluded with members expressing their appreciation to the outgoing committee for their dedication and service to the Society’s development.

Secretary: Vun Cheou Yee,Vice‑Secretary: Sr Christina Aluda,Treasurer: Prof Dr Helen Lasimbang,Committee members:Dr Anita Boay Guat Im,Datuk Hjh Zahra Ismail Gomes, Kent Chau Tak Bin Misah Padi,Datuk Asnimar Sukardi,Kang Bee Lee.
In his remarks after the election, Prof Datuk Dr Ajaz Ahmad Nabijan thanked members for their confidence in the new committee and reaffirmed SHAS’s commitment to promoting healthy ageing, active living, disease prevention and improving the quality of life for older people in Sabah through education, advocacy, research and community engagement.
He highlighted that Malaysia is expected to become an aged nation by 2030, with roughly 15.3% of the population — about 5.3 million people — aged 60 and above.
He said this demographic shift underlines the need for healthcare systems, communities and policymakers to prepare for the challenges and opportunities presented by an ageing population.
The new committee pledged to strengthen collaboration with government agencies, healthcare professionals, academic institutions, non‑governmental organisations and community partners to advance SHAS’s mission of enabling older adults in Sabah to age healthily, actively and with dignity.-pr/BNN
