SEMPORNA: The Semporna Islands Project (SIP) and the World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWF-Malaysia), with support from the European Union (EU), proudly announced the launch of Community Action Groups (CAG) through the Semporna Community Action Learning Exchange (SCALE) programme at Seafest Hotel in Semporna, Sabah.

This innovative initiative aims to enhance environmental conservation efforts in Semporna by fostering collaboration among local communities, government agencies, and conservation organisations.

The SCALE event served as the official platform for the launch of Community Action Groups (CAG), which will focus on three critical areas:

– Anti-Fish Bombing (AFB): Combating destructive fishing practices that damage marine ecosystems.

– No Plastic in Nature (NPIN): Promoting sustainable plastic waste management to protect oceans and wildlife.

– Hatchery: Supporting sustainable ocean farming of giant clams and abalone to enhance livelihoods and promote marine biodiversity.

This event marked a significant milestone in community-led conservation efforts with the official establishment of the Community Action Groups (CAGs), which will play a vital role in driving local initiatives to protect and conserve natural resources.

The event also included stakeholder dialogues, bringing together key partners such as the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Marine Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and the District Office to encourage collaboration and develop effective strategies for future conservation projects.-pr/BNN
