TAWAU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor welcomed the acquisition of two new quay cranes for Tawau Port, describing the RM70 million investment as a strategic move to strengthen the state’s port infrastructure and support Sabah’s long-term economic growth.

He said the investment reflects the State Government’s commitment, through Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB), to modernising critical infrastructure to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of Sabah’s ports, particularly on the east coast.

“Once operational, the cranes are expected to enhance productivity, operational reliability and overall cargo-handling efficiency at Tawau Port.

“They will support faster vessel turnaround, reduce waiting time and strengthen the port’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and growing cargo volumes,” he said at the ceremony to mark the acquisition of the cranes at Tawau Port here today.

Hajiji said an efficient and reliable port system is vital in supporting the growth of key sectors, especially export-oriented industries that contribute significantly to the state’s economy.

He expressed confidence that the upgrading of Tawau Port would further reinforce its role as an important maritime gateway for Sabah’s east coast, while improving connectivity to domestic and regional markets.

The Chief Minister also commended Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd, Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and all parties involved for their continued commitment to enhancing the state’s maritime infrastructure in support of Sabah’s development agenda.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Suria Capital Holdings Berhad, Datuk Seri Panglima Abd Rahman Dahlan, said the investment reflected Suria Capital Group’s long-term commitment to strategic infrastructure development.

“Tawau Port plays an important role in supporting trade, industry and regional connectivity on Sabah’s east coast. This RM70 million investment reflects our commitment to equipping the port with the infrastructure and equipment required to meet future trade demands and contribute to the economic development of Tawau and the surrounding region,” he said.

Group Managing Director of Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and SPSB, Datuk Ahmad Rizal Dahli, said the acquisition formed part of SPSB’s continued efforts to modernise and strengthen Tawau Port.

“These new cranes represent an important advancement in the development of Tawau Port. Once operational, they will enhance the efficiency and reliability of cargo-handling activities, improve services to port users and better support Sabah’s evolving trade and logistics requirements,” he said.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III/Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Datuk Ewon Benedick, State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman and Sabah Ports Authority Chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.-pr/BNN
