KOTA KINABALU: A sun bear entered a house in  Kg. Abai, Kinabatangan recently and was duly reported to the Sabah Wildlife Department.

A team comprising staff of the Sabah Wildlife Department and  Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre headed by Dr Nabila Sarkawi went to the site to assess the situation upon receiving the report.

A couple of days later, the team decided to install  bear trap near the house in question as the bear had since left the vicnity.

A statement released by the department stated that about three hours later the  sun bear entered the trap.  It was a male sun bear weighing 40kg.

A physical examination on it found injury on the front side of its left foot. The injury was believed to be self inflicted based on the condition of the cut and no foul play was suspected.

The bear was brought to the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre, Sepilok, Sandakan for further treatment. The Wildlife Department planned to release it back to the wild at Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary when it recovered from the injury.

Meanwhile, efforts to capture the sun bear that attacked a farmer in Entilibon was still continuing. The efforts to capture it entered the 28 days after the trap was installed in a forest near the area where sun bear attacked the farmer.-pr/BNN
