KOTA KINABALU: The Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl has teamed up with EyeMedics
Specialist Eye Centre Kota Kinabalu to provide free cataract surgery.
The surgery project is called “Hope in Sight”. RCKK Pearl’s current Club President, Majella Marjorie Tan Marquez, said that through this project, eligible women from the B40 low-income household bracket will be able to get free eye surgery which they may not be able to afford.
According to her, preventable blindness is one of Rotary International’s areas of focus and this is the 2 nd consecutive year that RCKK Pearl is carrying out its signature Hope in Sight project, coordinated by its Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze.
The Club’s involvement is in the selection of candidates. On EyeMedics’ part, Dr Terrence Soong will be performing the surgeries, and the cost will be borne by the Specialist Eye Centre, she stated.
“Majella also said that this year, the intraocular lenses used for the operations are funded by a Rotary Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation, which is the charitable arm of Rotary International.”
The Global Grant application for the Gift of Sight Sabah project was an initiative undertaken by Philip Chong, a past Governor of Rotary International District 3310 which includes Rotary clubs from Malacca, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Brunei.
