PENAMPANG: A year ago, the local economy at Donggongon town was boosted with the launch of the Donggongon Night Market. Located along the road in front of the Tamu Sangadau site, between the Petronas petrol station and the roundabout, the night market aimed to become a vibrant new hub for both residents and visitors alike.

Datuk Stephen Sampil, the chairman of the initiative, reflected on the achievements over the past year during the anniversary celebrations, yesterday. He highlighted that the initial response had been very encouraging from both vendors and customers.

Since its inception, the market hosted a variety of engaging activities designed to attract more visitors and create a lively, memorable atmosphere. The enthusiastic turnout inspired organisers to expand the range of offerings and ensure the market remained a popular destination. To keep visitors entertained and eager to return, there were exciting prize draws for both visitors and vendors, including weekly lucky dips where three fortunate shoppers could win prizes, adding an element of surprise and fun to their evening.

However, Stephen acknowledged that there had been challenges, such as waning interest and slower footfall, but upcoming initiatives hoped to address these issues.

“While the market was sustained and achieved some of its objectives, we want  to enhance it further by focusing on improving infrastructure, facilities, and environmental beautification to attract more visitors,” Stephen stated.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring long-term sustainability through better parking management and increased community engagement. Plans also include upgrading the stage and surrounding areas. Collaboration with authorities on traffic and parking issues was essential to elevate the market’s status in the future.

Overall, he was optimistic, with a strong commitment to continuous improvement.

The event’s chairman reiterated that one of the main objectives was to provide micro and small entrepreneurs with a platform to showcase and sell their products. This initiative was seen as a strategic move in line with the Madani government’s vision of enhancing the livelihood and economic well-being of the local community.

Stephen, who was also Deputy President of the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), shared that the night market was also envisioned to position Donggongon and the Penampang Municipality as a must-visit destination, particularly following its recent elevation to municipal status.

“Donggongon serves as the socio-economic and commercial hub of Penampang. Establishing a lively night market was both timely and appropriate, especially given the high vehicle ownership in the area, which facilitated easy access,” he explained.

Organised by the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), in collaboration with the Penampang Municipal Council and other trade associations, the Donggongon Nite Market operates every Saturday from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM. It features a diverse range of food, beverages, value-added products, and entertainment options, making it a popular evening destination for the community.

Stephen encouraged the public to support the event, stating, “We were confident everyone would find something of interest and enjoy their time at the Donggongon Nite Market.”-BNN
