KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor has instructed the State Disaster Command Centre to closely monitor the flood situation in Tawau, which was declared a disaster zone following flooding in many parts of the district since Friday (July 24).
“All relevant agencies have been deployed to the affected areas. I want them to be prepared to provide immediate assistance to flood victims,” he said.
The Chief Minister also advised residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions from the authorities when necessary.
He said the situation is currently under control, noting that relevant agencies are already on the ground providing assistance.
The Tawau Natural Disaster Committee declared the disaster zone at 8.30am today after several residential areas in Tanjung Batu Keramat, Taman Ria 1, Taman Hot Spring, Taman Sunshu, and Taman Sri Balung were inundated following heavy rains since last night.
The committee is also in the process of gathering information on the number of victims affected for possible relocation to temporary evacuation centres if necessary.
As of 11am today, one temporary evacuation centre (PPS) has been opened at the Tawau Sports Complex Multi-Purpose Hall for 96 household heads and 335 victims.-pr/BNN
