KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is taking a bold step to transform its tourism industry by integrating sports, recreation, culture, and creativity into a new tourism approach called ‘Playcation’, said Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, Minister of Youth Development, Sports Progress, and the Creative Economy of Sabah.

Speaking at the Gala Night of the Playcation event, he emphasised that Playcation is more than just a leisure activity; it is a comprehensive experience combining tourism, sports, entertainment, and social interaction designed to appeal especially to the younger generation seeking meaningful and engaging travel experiences.

“Sabah has all the ingredients to become a strong and attractive Playcation destination — from beautiful beaches and islands to mountains, forests, and rich cultural traditions. But we must go beyond just viewing Sabah as a scenic destination; we need to offer experiences,”  Nizam stated.

He highlighted the potential of this concept to not only enhance Sabah’s tourism sector but also to create opportunities for local youths, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in the creative economy. “When we combine elements like content creation, cultural performances, local cuisine, and community interaction, we can offer visitors a complete journey—one that leaves lasting memories,” he added.

The minister also expressed his support for expanding Playcation initiatives beyond Kota Kinabalu to other districts such as Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, and Semporna, each of which has its own unique attractions and cultural identity. “With proper development, Sabah can provide diverse recreational, sports, and cultural experiences throughout the year, boosting tourism and creating employment opportunities,” he said.

He emphasised that collaboration among industry players, the government, and local communities is vital for the success of this initiative. “We need fresh ideas, creativity, and the courage to try new experiences to promote Sabah’s beauty and culture to the world,” he urged.

Concluding his speech, Nizam expressed hope that the Playcation concept would evolve into a platform that benefits not only the tourism industry but also supports the growth of local businesses, youth involvement, and the creative economy, making Sabah a vibrant hub of innovation and cultural exchange.

“Let us work together to make Sabah a destination where visitors come not just to holiday but to play, create, connect, and build unforgettable memories,” he said.
