KOTA KINABALU: SEDCO Communications Sdn Bhd (Scomm) is moving beyond being a telecommunications infrastructure company to become a key enabler of Sabah’s digital transformation.
Its Executive Director, Subha Maraiah , said Scomm’s ambition now encompasses 5G, artificial intelligence, smart infrastructure, digital solutions and future technologies.
Speaking at the 5G in-building coverage collaboration signing ceremony with SICC, ITCC Penampang, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu and U Mobile at SICC today, Subha said S.Comm carries the responsibility and strength of being part of SEDCO.
“For us, commercial success alone is not enough. Whatever we build must ultimately contribute towards Sabah, towards our economy, our businesses, our communities and our people,” he said.
“Our vision is straightforward: to connect Sabah today while building the digital foundations Sabah will need tomorrow.”
SComm was established under its present name in 2009 to develop telecommunications infrastructure in Sabah and obtained its licences from MCMC in 2010, beginning with fibre-optic infrastructure, broadband connectivity and telco towers.
On the four partnerships, Subha said it is meaningful that the ceremony was held at SICC, which has established itself as an important business-events destination owned by Innoprise Corporation, a subsidiary of Yayasan Sabah Group.
He thanked SICC management for entrusting SComm and U Mobile with the deployment and maintenance of its 5G in-building connectivity.
“Our responsibility is not merely to install infrastructure. It is to make sure that the infrastructure supports the ambitions of this venue and contributes towards positioning Sabah as a digitally capable destination for major international events,” he said.
He described U Mobile as having grown from a challenger telco into Malaysia’s newest 5G network provider with next-generation network including 5G Standalone capabilities for lower latency, higher capacity and network slicing. He said the partnership combines U Mobile’s capabilities with SComm’s local presence and infrastructure knowledge.
As ITCC appoints Scomm as its Telco infrastructure provider, Subha said it is an opportunity to demonstrate how telco infrastructure can support an entire commercial ecosystem of businesses, retailers, offices and visitors.
Noting that the hotel, whose owning company Kinabalu International Hotel commenced operations in 1976 and is now majority-owned by SEDCO, has been part of KK’s hospitality landscape for decades, he said hospitality today is increasingly digital and guests expect seamless connectivity.
Subha said when looking at the organisations represented, SICC, U Mobile, ITCC and Hyatt, he sees an ecosystem taking shape covering convention and business events, telecommunications, commercial development and hospitality, all connected through digital infrastructure.
“This is exactly where Scomm intends to position itself. We want to connect Sabah, building by building, business by business, community by community. But our ambition goes beyond connectivity,” he said.
He thanked all partners for entrusting Scomm, saying trust must be earned not through promises but through delivery.
“I want everyone here today to remember this occasion, because this is only the beginning for Scomm. We have a much bigger journey ahead of us.”
“With the guidance and support of our Chairman Datuk Masiung Banah, the SEDCO Board and management, our strategic partners, and most importantly our dedicated S.Comm team, I believe we are entering a new chapter,” he added.
