KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) has cautioned that a nationwide strike by government medical contract workers, including doctors at public hospitals, at this critical moment of fighting Covid-19, may lead to a serious breach by Covid-19 and trigger another ‘disaster’, inevitably.

Its President, Tan Sri T.C Goh said since the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced on Friday, that the government has agreed to improve their benefits including extending the contracts of all junior medical officers, dental officers and pharmaceutical officers for two years upon completion of their mandatory service, they should continue to engage with the government, if they have any other demands, so as to achieve an amicable and a ‘win-win’ solution.

“Currently, there’s nothing more important than fighting Covid-19; hence the services of our medical team, our medical contract workers included, have become even more urgent to the nation and the people. Their dedication and scarification are indeed much valued and appreciated by the people!” acknowledged Goh.

In a statement issued today, God who is also President of the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) also supported the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) objection to any forms of strike by medical workers in the country, at this critical time.

He especially concurred with MMA president Datuk Dr Subramaniam Muniandy for saying that, as professional medical workers, they must always put the patients’ interest first.

Nonetheless, Goh also expressed his empathy and concern towards their plights, especially in regards to their welfare and future; he thus supported MMA’s initiative to negotiate with the government to seek for an amicable and a ‘win-win’ solution to their plights.

He especially hoped that, following its recent decision and announcement, the government could expedite the delivery of the ultimate demand of the contract doctors for better security in their career.

Besides this, he also urged the government to better appreciate the contributions of the government healthcare workers, the contract medical workers included, so as to give them a stronger sense of belonging to better serve the country.

“At this critical moment, the people of Malaysia certainly do not wish to see our front liners wavering,” he concluded.-pr/BNN
