KOTA KINABALU: The youth wing of United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) has welcomed the decision of the Unity Government to reveal the final report of the investigation into the Double Six tragedy to the public.
Its chief, Felix Joseph Saang, said that Sabahans have been waiting for this announcement for a long time because many are still wondering what actually happened.
He said that the government’s move to declassify the Sabah Air plane crash investigation report, which was previously bound by the Official Secrets Act 1972, will give confidence to the people, especially the victims’ relatives, in the government’s transparency
“We commend the courage and sincerity of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Government today to announce the final report of the investigation.
“The people of Sabah have the right to know what actually happened in the accident,” he said in a media statement.
Felix made these comments in response to the Prime Minister’s statement that the government will reveal the full report of the Double Six tragedy plane crash that occurred on June 6, 1976.
Anwar was quoted as saying that the decision was made taking into account the views of the people of Sabah and the demands of the heirs who wanted to know detailed information about the incident.
The tragedy, also known as the Double Six Crash, claimed the lives of 11 people, including the then Chief Minister, Tun Fuad Stephens.
The tragedy also killed the state Finance Minister, Datuk Salleh Sulong; State Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Peter Mojuntin; State Public Works and Communications Minister, Datuk Chong Tien Vun; Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Darius Binion; and Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Finance, Datuk Wahid Peter Andu.-pr/BNN
