KOTA KINABALU: A local man was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for driving dangerously by speeding to avoid police inspection, recently.
The Magistrate Court ordered him to serve the sentence consecutively with another eight months jail he was currently serving for theft.
Magistrate Afiq Agoes meted out the sentence after Victor admitted driving his Toyota Pick-Up recklessly at a junction in Jalan Ketiau along Jalan Papar Lama – Penampang on May 17, at 2.35am.
The offence is framed under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years and to a fine of not less than RM5, 000 and not more than RM15, 000.
The court was told that police was patrolling zone Papar – Kimanis via police vehicle when they saw a vehicle being driven by a person in a suspicious manner at the A – Mart Kimanis area.
They approached the vehicle to take a closer look but it suddenly sped away and try to escape.
The police gave chase up to the Jalan ketiau junction in Jalan where the accused suddenly stopped his vehicle causing the Police car to crash into his vehicle.
He then sped away but the police managed to track the vehicle and the accused was arrested on May 18, at his house in Kg. Ketiau.
During mitigation, Victor asked for a lenient sentence saying that he had a wife and two children. He also asked the court to run his sentence concurrently.
Traffic prosecuting officer Insp. Sallehudin Sulaiman urged for an appropriated sentence.
He told the court that the accused was currently serving eight months jail for stealing and asked for the jail term to be served consecutively as a lesson to the accused. -By Evachel J John/BNN
