PENAMPANG: The 27th annual GRESUNALI Bazaar brought together 180 participants and visitors from across Sabah, highlighting nearly three decades of efforts to strengthen sustainable livelihoods, community enterprises, and grassroots solidarity in the state.

Held at Balbina Sabinti Hall, PACOS Trust, the event served as a platform for farmers, women’s groups, community-based enterprises, and persons with disabilities involved in socio-economic initiatives to exchange ideas and build stronger networks.

In her keynote address, Anne Lasimbang said GRESUNALI has continued to provide opportunities for grassroots communities to share knowledge, strengthen local economies, and promote sustainable practices rooted in local realities.

A major highlight of this year’s gathering was the official launch of Kivatu Nature Farm, a model farm designed to demonstrate sustainable use of limited land while serving as a training centre for rural and urban communities in agroecological farming methods. Organisers said the farm is expected to help strengthen community-led food systems and sustainable livelihoods in Sabah.

The GRESUNALI initiative receives funding support from the European Union, reflecting international backing for community-driven sustainability programmes in Sabah.

Herbert Roger, speaking on behalf of Sabah Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries Datuk Jamawi Ja’afar, said the programme aligns with the ministry’s vision for food security and rural development. He also highlighted home gardens as a practical way to improve household food resilience.

He expressed support for initiatives led by PACOS Trust and Kivatu Nature Farm, particularly in promoting environmentally friendly agriculture and strengthening Indigenous community enterprises in Sabah.

Participants also raised concerns over UPOV 91, urging the Malaysian government to reconsider adopting the framework due to its potential impact on rural farmers, traditional seed holders, and community seed systems.

Organisers said the strong turnout from districts across Sabah reflects growing public interest in agroecology, community empowerment, and sustainable livelihood practices.  -BNN
