KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has directed the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) to take urgent action on the recommendations made in the report on the findings by UK-registered Wild Welfare which conducted its independent audit at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park recently.

Its Minister Datuk Christina Liew said several recommendations were made by the organisation to improve the welfare of the animals in the park.

“Wild Welfare had presented its findings to the Ministry. We acknowledge that there are indeed several animal welfare issues that need to be resolved at the park. While some actions may need some time to be completed, many could be done as soon as possible. In this
respect, the park may need to be closed to the public to enable us to concentrate on the works to be carried out,” she said in a media statement. Wild Welfare was in Sabah at the request of the SWD and concluded its independent audit at the park on Oct 11.

Liew was commenting on a fresh petition that is making its rounds asking the Ministry to take immediate action to improve the lives of animals at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park.

She advised the person who initiated the petition to present truthful findings on the conditions of animals in the park.

“There is no mention of an emaciated elephant in the park in  the Wild Welfare report. Thus we believe that this is not an issue at the park. We are equally very concerned about the welfare of our animals. We, therefore, are committed to urgently take action on all recommendations made by Wild Welfare,” she said.-pr/BNN
