SINGAPORE: Ahead of Merdeka and the school holidays, new search data from digital travel platform Agoda reveals that Malaysians are favouring shorter, local escapes, with stays averaging around two days. The trend indicates travellers are making the most of limited time by choosing quick trips that are easy to organise yet still provide a meaningful break.

Kota Kinabalu, Langkawi, and Kuantan are the most sought-after destinations for bookings between 22 August and 7 September 2026. Additionally, several locations are experiencing renewed interest, led by Kota Bharu, where accommodation searches have increased approximately 3.6 times compared to the same period last year.

When time is short, Malaysians tend to select destinations that are simple to reach and relax into. According to Agoda’s search data, Kota Kinabalu remains the most popular, followed by Langkawi and Kuantan. Whether it’s savouring seafood and sunsets in Kota Kinabalu, enjoying a laid-back island retreat in Langkawi, or spending a weekend on the beach in Kuantan with local cuisine, these spots offer effortless escapes that require minimal planning.

Kuantan saw particularly significant growth, with searches increasing 2.8 times in 2026 compared to the previous year. Langkawi and Kota Kinabalu also experienced notable rises of 69% and 53% respectively, underscoring their continued appeal as convenient and familiar holiday destinations.

While traditional favourites remain popular, other locations are gaining momentum. Kota Bharu recorded the largest increase, with searches around 3.6 times higher than in 2025. Miri, Johor Bahru, Ipoh, and Kuching also saw substantial growth, with searches rising by 2.4, 2.3, 2.1, and 2 times respectively. These trends suggest Malaysians are exploring a broader range of local getaways this Merdeka season, from culinary and cultural trips to vibrant city breaks and relaxed escapes.

Fabian Teja, Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, commented, “Travellers are becoming more intentional with their limited time. Instead of waiting for a longer holiday, many Malaysians are planning trips around long weekends and school breaks, looking for rewarding experiences. It’s encouraging to see continued interest in familiar destinations alongside emerging ones, showing that travellers are balancing comfort with curiosity.
