KOTA KINABALU: Four locations in Sabah recorded Air Pollutant Index (API) readings at unhealthy levels as of 8 am today, following poor air quality conditions in several parts of the state.
Based on data from the Sabah Department of Environment (DOE), updated on September 1, 2026, Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest reading at 171, followed by Kimanis and Keningau at 156 each, while Tawau recorded 132. Sandakan recorded an API reading of 91, which is categorised as moderate.
In view of this, the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) advised the public, particularly children, senior citizens, pregnant women and individuals with respiratory problems, to reduce outdoor activities and avoid strenuous physical activities.
Those who need to go outdoors are advised to wear suitable face masks, drink sufficient water, maintain personal hygiene after outdoor activities and ensure good ventilation indoors.
JPBN also reminded the public to avoid open burning and to keep abreast of the latest API readings as well as advisories issued by the DOE and health authorities.
Meanwhile, those experiencing symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain are advised to seek treatment at the nearest healthcare facility.
Sabah JPBN will continue to monitor air quality conditions throughout the state and advised the public to take precautionary measures to reduce health risks arising from exposure to polluted air.-pr/BNN
